The South Africa Community Fund is a not-for-profit organization that has its roots in the anti-apartheid movement of the 1970s and 1980s. Since liberation in 1994 South Africa entered an era of peace under the leadership of President Nelson Mandela. The nation has had to wrestle with its past demons while listening to thousands of stories of torture and oppression as told to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (chaired by Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu). And the nation has faced the challenge of rebuilding a society that was organized for the benefits of whites only. It is in this context that the South Africa Community Fund was created—to support local social transformation organizations and to conduct training in peace building. The programs are many—an academic semester, service learning, internships, community grants, the arts, spiritual formation and retreats. More than 30 universities, colleges and seminaries have participated in the programs of the South Africa Community Fund.
The "us" of the South Africa Community Fund is a diverse group of spirited people—children who are fighting AIDS, artists who are producing audacious sculptures, academics who are inspiring their students, moms who volunteer in nutrition programs, visiting campus teams that do service learning projects, donors who provide grants to this work, social activists who continue to build the new South Africa, volunteer staff who come back to the country year after year to lead new teams of college students, and church leaders who have gone from fighting for freedom to fighting against poverty.
The South Africa Community Fund is supported through the fees of its programs and donations from the public (gifts to the Fund are tax deductible and are gladly welcomed!).
